Bishop Stopford School Science and Art Block
Architect: Grayling Thomas Architects
PROJECT VALUE: £1.2m
Following a successful bid to the government’s Condition Improvement Fund, this new four-storey extension - linking together art, English and science departments - was constructed under a design-and-build contract.
A disused service yard was transformed into science laboratories and prep rooms, tutorial and classroom spaces and an all-glass, open-plan art department, while a sculpture garden offers art students an outdoor exhibition space. The design features coloured glazing to reduce glare in learning spaces and there are mobile fume cupboards in the science laboratories along with an outdoor spray booth in the art department.
Solid Structures designed a steel frame structure with precast concrete floors, and vehicle tracking was undertaken to ensure vehicle access could be maintained.
