Harris Manchester College

Location: OXFORD
Architect: YIANGOU ARCHITECTS
STONEMASON: OG STONEMASONRY
PROJECT VALUE: £1.25m
DATE: 2013 - 2014

Designed by Yiangou Architects and funded by generous benefactors, this stunning building gives the college 5 additional en-suite student rooms and the city a new ornamental clock tower with attendant clocks and mechanism. It also features a new ornamental entrance gate on axis with the Arlosh Hall.

The Siew-Sngiem Clock Tower & Sukum Navapan Gate are constructed with Clipsham limestone expressed in coursed rubble walling and rusticated ashlar with traditional detailing.

The overarching sentiment of the client’s brief was that the new building take on a significant architectural presence on the streetscape and to have, in their own words, “a jewel-like quality”. The project has been extremely well received in a particularly sensitive and historic location, and received a commendation from the Oxford Preservation Trust in 2014.
