The Fifth Girls’ House is a new three storey boarding house at Shrewsbury School which will accommodate 57 boarders alongside study spaces and communal and staff areas.

LOCATION: SHREWSBURY, SHROPSHIRE
ARCHITECT: ADRIAN JAMES
PROJECT VALUE: CONFIDENTIAL
DATE: 2022

The Challenge

Internally the design calls for large, open plan communal areas whilst the façade will incorporate arches and a chequerboard fenestration.

The SOLID Approach

We have designed the structure to have widely spaced columns internally whilst externally the structural grid is more narrowly spaced to support precast concrete surrounds. At roof level trusses span from back to front whilst transfer trusses in the corner areas take loads to the perimeter structural columns.
