Freedom Leisure are in the process of updating a series of their leisure centres in the Somerset area. The work at Wincanton Leisure Centre includes the instalment of solar panels and an air source heat pump and the refurbishment and repurposing of areas within the existing leisure centre.

The Challenge
Freedom Leisure wanted to repurpose an existing dance studio, creating a new gym in its place and turn a large connecting store room into a spin studio. There was limited information and knowledge available on the existing building loads so we were unsure as to what was structurally possible on our initial site visit.
The SOLID Approach
We used back analysis to check the stability before conducting opening up works, installing new steel posts where necessary. The SOLID team helped on the ancillary works for the air source heat pumps. Initially advising what may be possible within the allowed budget, then designing support grillage to lift the pumps off the ground.
